Welcome to the wonderful world of

Mr. Alexander.

Shining a little common sense light onto the myths and mistakes

of size, health, weight, fat and happiness

and their relationship

to wellness, vanity and winning the lottery.

(common sense is strange stuff - sort of like good fairies - it works best when you believe in it, even in the face of assumed scientific data. So, for the duration of this advice, suspend all you THINK you know about fat grams, carbs, calories, cholesterol and health and stick with what makes sense.)

Here's the first thing that makes sense.....

Your body has only one source of nutrients - food. Air is not food, water is not food, vitamin pills and supplements are not food, diet shakes are not food. If it looks like food it probably is; if it doesn't then it almost certainly is not. There is also no great nutrient fairy who comes into your bedroom late at night and does wonderful things to your body. (There may well be SOMEONE who does that - but they are not the nutrient fairy).

Your body has to do four basic things with the nutrients which you provide...

1.. It has to generate electricity to run your nervous system.

2. It has to manufacture chemicals to run your brain, - endomorphines, hormones, etc.

3. It has to rebuild your body, cell by cell, hair to toenails, 24 hrs a day 'til the day you die.

4. It has to burn nutrients to make energy.

Common sense tells us that if you restrict and repress your intake of nutrients, then your body cannot do all four of these things at optimum level.. That same common sense tells us that increasing exercise levels without increasing nutrients, further limits the body's ability to absorb what it needs to keep it functioning well and happy.

IF THERE ALREADY WAS A DIET AND EXERCISE PROGRAM

THAT WORKED WELL,

WE'D ALL BE ON IT,

AND WE'D ALL BE LEAN AND HEALTHY AND HAPPY,

AND WE OBVIOUSLY AREN'T!!!

As we eat, the body stores some of it's nutrients in the form of fat, reserve fat. As we all know it tends to store this fat in the most unflattering and unhealthy parts of our body - like the thighs and belly.

****************************************************************************

MYTH #1.

IT IS A FREQUENT AND INCORRECT ASSUMPTION THAT THIS STORED FAT IS FOR YOUR BODY TO BURN UP WHEN YOU EXERCISE OR TO FEED YOU WHEN YOU GET HUNGRY.

****************************************************************************

In fact, the main purpose of this stored fat is to help maintain body temperature. As you get cold, a process called Thermogenics starts eating this fat and uses the energy generated to raise the body temperature.

When you don't eat frequently enough, your body's

metabolic rate (how fast it changes fat to energy) drops....

THAT MEANS YOUR BODY DOESN'T BURN FAT!!!

***************************************************************************

MISTAKE #1

BUT, IF YOU EXERCISE A LOT, THE BODY HAS TO BURN SOMETHING TO MAKE ENERGY... SO IT BURNS MUSCLE TISSUE.

***************************************************************************

(It can't burn much nutrient because you're restricting it by eating less frequently or by eating a less varied, nutrient - poor diet, and your body has to use what it gets just to run itself). Muscle weighs more than fat and so one CAN lose weight by diet and exercise but you don't burn much fat and you do destroy muscle tissue.

As soon as you increase your food or decrease your exercise the body will rebuild the muscle tissue which it has burned and so you will regain the weight. This is yo-yo dieting. It is healthier to be a little overweight than to keep going up and down at the cost of weakened muscle tissue.

*************************************************************************

ADVICE #1

THIS, BY NO MEANS, IS MEANT TO SUGGEST THAT YOU SHOULDN'T EXERCISE.

***************************************************************************

Of course you should exercise, wisely, carefully, and for the right reasons. You should exercise to develop your body after you get it healthy and to get it into the right kind of shape.

WEIGHT AND FAT ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS....Bearing this in mind we come to another piece of reassuring common sense -

(UNLESS YOU'RE GETTING ON A VERY CROWDED ELEVATOR)

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU WEIGH.

The amount that one weighs is one of the most unreliable physical properties that the body has. Height and width vary little and slowly. Comparatively speaking, body weight soars and dives from hour to hour and has only a passing reference to body fat content.

There are no weight police out there....if you could have the body and health that you really want you wouldn't really care how much it WEIGHED.

What matters is not what you weigh but how big are you, what are you composed of and how healthy are you???

***************************************************************************

ADVICE # 2

STOP WEIGHING YOURSELF.

***************************************************************************

Find your tightest clothes, clothes you can barely get into, clothes you wouldn't dare go into your living room in, never mind outside in public.. Put them on and then take them off and put them in a chair in the bedroom. Don't put them away because you need them to be where they can remind you daily of what you're doing.. Repeat this process at the end of each week.....

And now for a little biological history lesson.

Your body, and everyone else's, was designed in the ice age. If you open your mouth and look at your teeth you will see that they are flat, meaning that you are a grazing creature by design. (Yes I know you have four pointy ones in the front, but those are only there in case you find a wounded elk or something....primarily you are designed to forage for food; roots, weeds, nuts, fruits, veggies and like that.)

Every system in your body is designed to run on a constant supply of food - not just three meals a day - food in, nutrients absorbed and waste out....that's the way it's supposed to work.. But ever since the diet fads began in the fifties we are eating less and less and exercising more and more. It is no surprise then that, since the fifties, there has been a marked increase in numbers of diseases which are directly linked to how we eat.

The new data that nutritionists are spreading tells us that eating 5 or 6 small meals a day is the best way to maintain a lean and healthy body

AND IT IS.

But this advice assumes a start from ground zero - that you already have a raised metabolism, lots of muscle tone and a minimum of excess body fat. It assumes that you have lots of energy, little stress and a well enforced immune system. It assumes that you are healthy and calm and happy and pleased with how you look and who you are, that you are self assured and confident.

IF YOU ALREADY ARE ALL OF THESE THINGS

THEN YOU ARE NOT READING THIS ANYWAY.

If you want to be all of these things then you must

increase the frequency with which you eat.

It is difficult to adjust one's life to eat even four or five small meals a day and almost impossible to eat more than that because you have to make time to eat a meal - even a small one. It is inconvenient and most people cannot do it because they feel that almost ANYTHING is important enough to skip a meal for.

As anyone knows who has ever tried to break a bad habit, you can't just do it. Breaking a bad habit, particularly a lifelong one, requires massive willpower, self discipline and desire...all the things which are so admirable in others and often so lacking in ourselves.

So, to make it simple, we go back to common sense.

To break a bad habit...don't try!!

Instead develop a contrary good habit which makes it impossible to continue with the bad one. This translates very easily into everyday behavior. You must develop the habit of eating more frequently and you must overcome the inconvenience factor which makes it difficult to eat 5 or 6 small meals a day. If you wish to increase the frequency of food into your system you must make it easy...so easy that it doesn't interrupt your life at all.

AND THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT!!

************************************************************************

ADVICE #3.

GO TO THE GROCERY STORE AND BUY A BOX OF ZIPLOCK BAGGIES AND A BUNCH OF FRESH FRUITS, VEGGIES, NUTS, CEREAL, TRAIL MIX.....ANYTHING THAT YOU WILL EAT THAT'S NOT COMPLETELY JUNK.

***********************************************************************

When you get the stuff home, do not put it in the refrigerator. If you do you will forget about it and it will turn green and hairy and you will not eat it. Take it into your kitchen, wash it, cut it up and fill up the baggies with a mixture of the stuff.

Then go everywhere that you go in your daily life and put a baggy there, including but not limited to, purse, briefcase, next to each phone, next to your easy chair, in the car, in the bathroom, the laundry room, the kids room, the garage, your workout bag...everywhere!!!

In addition to the meals that you already eat, whenever you use the phone or the car or see a commercial or do the laundry..whenever you do anything....

PUT A BITE IN YOUR MOUTH ...

just a bite.

Try and eat a bite about every 20 minutes or so - more often if you can. If your job has a policy about not eating at work, remember that this policy was designed to stop you from slopping chili dogs and grease burgers all over the place. If you go to your boss and tell him/her what you are doing and why, then he/she should have little objection to a system which will give you more energy and brainpower and reduce the chance of you making health insurance claims . If you eat this way for 30-40 days, lots of things will happen to your body and mind...

all of them good..

1 You will gain weight. (It doesn't matter what you weigh ). As your body receives these extra nutrients it will rebuild the muscle mass it's been tearing down all this time. You may even gain a little mass until your metabolic rate increases ....that's O.K.

2 Your body will begin to work better in all phases. You will sleep better, have more energy and be less tired. Your eyes will be brighter, your skin clearer, your nails stronger. You will be calmer, less tense and less subject to moodiness - hormonal or otherwise.

Remember, everything your body does, it does from one source of nutrient.

Common sense tells us that increasing the amount and variety of nutrients will increase the body's ability to run itself.

3. Your relationships with others will improve. The most common assumption is that most interpersonal problems are generally caused by excessive and/or repressed stress

****************************************************************************

MYTH #2

STRESS IS CAUSED BY OUTSIDE INFLUENCES.

***************************************************************************

Stress is actually caused by how we relate to and handle outside influences. When the body has the necessary nutrients to make the right brain chemicals in the right amounts at the right time, we FEEL better, we are in fact better equipped to handle outside pressures and not just repress them and hope that they'll go away.

4. You will eat a better and a more varied diet....because, only a moron will eat the same thing every 20 minutes all day long.

5. As your body accepts that there will be more food arriving soon, it will be more selective about the stuff that it absorbs and keeps from the food.

That means, if you eat this way you can eat more junk than if you diet, because your body will take in and keep less of the junk and get rid of the rest in the way that it's supposed to. It means that your toxic wastes will not sit so long in your lower intestinal tract, it will reduce your chances of getting lots of horrible things like colon cancer, prostate disease, vaginitis etc. Your waste system will now be working correctly. Remember the body is an absorbing machine, if you give it good stuff to absorb, it will. If you get the poisons out sooner it will absorb less of them....common sense...Huh??

Once you start this process, if you're out driving and you haven't eaten for almost an hour and all you have is a Big Mac and a Twinkie..EAT THEM. Your body doesn't know that it's a Big Mac and a Twinkie, only your brain knows that and it doesn't absorb any nutrients at all.

Your digestive system knows only that it's food and it will take the nutrients from it and get rid of the rest.

6. You will begin rebuilding your body cell by cell like you're supposed to.

Remember, your great grandparents did not worry about falling down at the age of 65 and breaking a hip, they were out hauling hay and slopping pigs at that age. They ate frequently and varied their foods. It is only in recent years that we have come to equate food with ill health.

**************************************************************************

MYTH #3

FOOD IS FAT

***************************************************************************

Food is not fat, food is food - fat is fat. Food makes fuel and allows the body to function. It can make fat, but if your metabolism is working correctly, the fat will not become excessive. Think of all the pictures of cave men and women that you've ever seen...people who knew or cared nothing about carbs or fat grams, calories or cholesterol. They ate everything they could get their hands on, all day long.

NONE of those people in the pictures were fat.

7. You will like yourself better. Not only will you be operating at closer to optimum levels, but you will have the knowledge that you have made a deliberate positive change for the better in your life.

8. You will be luckier. Since fortune is generally a combination of action and attitude, the more energy you have and the better you feel, the better you'll be able to take advantage of situations as they arise.

People make their own luck.

All these things can and will happen

to your body and to your life.

Sounds unbelievable....doesn't it???

Or does it all just make common sense???

And when all is said and done, what harm could it do you to eat this way for a few weeks?? How much could a few extra veggies and stuff cost??? How much weight and fat could such a diet possibly add?? What, in fact do you have to lose???

EAT FOR VANITY -EAT FOR SANITY

EAT FOR HEALTH - EAT FOR WEALTH

BUT EAT.
