Welcome to the wonderful world of

Mr. Alexander.

thirTEEN

Ten is not a teenager

and never really was...

It's just the letters found therein

that give a child "because...."

Eleven's not a teenager,

It's just a growed-up child.

But getting closer from afar,

can drive a daughter wild.

Twelve is not a teenager,

Just likes to think it is..

We're nevermore a little girl,

we're now a Junior Ms.

But oh, no morn' will dawn so bright,

No more resplendent day,

as that which ushers in the words,

You honestly now say...

"I can do this now... and do that...

And do the other too.

I need no more be queried at,

and questioned what I do.."

"Adulthood is just round the bend,

I see it, plain as day..

I have no time for silly rhymes,

nor childhood games to play".

"I have a future coming soon,

for which I must prepare.

And I can shave, and paint my face,

and rearrange my hair."

"And make grown-up decisions,

on which body parts to pierce..

And who to treat so sweet and kind,

and who to treat more fierce.

"And who to simply just ignore,

Like vapors on the breeze..

And float on into womanhood

with innate, graceful ease."

I hear you think these timeless words..

we all thought, long ago.

And I don't want to wake you up,

and tell you "it ain't so".

But Daddy's jobs are hard sometimes,

and cause them lots of pain.

It's difficult to free the colt,

yet still maintain the rein.

Enjoy this year, my diamond dear,

And hold it very close.

Remember when I tug the rein,

It's YOU I love the most.

Remember when you think you've grown,

Ahead of all your years.

That I must guide your racing head,

despite your flowing tears.

That I must still the bad guy be,

Maintainer of the rules..

Like what to wear and how to share..

and

"Dammit, get to school."

It's not that I don't wish to have

An adult for a friend,

It's just that I'm grown-up and know,

that growin' up don't end...

Because of birthdays, or of teens,

or adulthood or age.

And in the book that writes your life,

This year is but a page.

So read it, and enjoy it,

and savor every word.

You wait so long to get there

To rush would be absurd.

I'll be there when you reach the end,

and turn the page again.

And I shall pray that, on that day,

You'll still call me your friend.

I love you,

my precious diamond.

daddy.
