Roosevelt School on Shippan Point in Stamford Connecticut was started in 1957. It was a boarding school in the Jewish Consevative Tradition. Kosher style food. A lovely Chapel with a lovely Rabbi, and an ex-Nazi for a headmaster. We all ate, slept, and learned in a one large building. Boys on one floor and girls on another. Dining room on the ground floor and classrooms all over the place. There were no locks on the staircases and getting from one floor of the dorms to another was not a problem. Many a student was suspended for being where they wern't supposed to be at odd hours of the day or night. Many a teacher was asked to leave for being where they weren't supposed to be at odd hours of the day or night. There was a lovely quad to hang out in and smoke joints.. no no.. cigarettes. And a canteen with a free jukebox to hang out in and listen to music and smoke joints.. no no.. cigarettes. It was very easy to escape the grounds to go the 2 blocks to the Long Island Sound and watch sunrise after a hard night of hallucinating. No No Studying.. ( You get the idea) We placed food orders through a sandwich shop in Stamford. BLT's and Meatball Parms at 3 AM.. So much for Kosher. The last graduating class was in 1974 after which the school caught a bad case of Jewish Lightning. I.E. it burned to the ground. (We're not sure if it was a disgruntled student or a psychotic owner looking for the insurance settlement to finance his third home in Boca). Roosevelt was a place for "troubled" kids whose parents didn't really know what else to do with them, or kids who really didn't know what to do with their "troubled" parents. Although Reet and I were there at different times (I was invited not to return to this hallowed place of learnng after the '69 school year) we became fast friends through Silvy and the rest of the class of '70 crew. - Larry Zinn
So, it was decided that i would do my senior year in a private school. The school selected was in Stamford Connecticut called Roosevelt School, a Jewish boarding school. I had agreed to cut off my shoulder length hair and don a uniform! The first day in my dorm room i put a poster up on the wall. It was a photo of me enlarged to poster size. It showed me from feet first lying in a bed reading a Playboy, my hair flowing over my shoulders! Another student walked in the room. A large surly lookin fellow. He looked at the poster and asked if it was me, to which i nodded yes. He then said " I think we're gonna be good friends. This guy turned out to be Steven (Silvy) Silverberg. And the nutball was right! We've been friends ever since! Silvy lived in Long Beach, Long Island, NY with his grandparents. His folks died when he was little. He was a sports guy and loved to surf. Whereas i went in one direction after Roosevelt, he went to California to see a Dead concert and never came back east! There are only a few others i have stayed friends with from Roosevelt..Larry Zinn..he went there the year before, but somehow we met and connected right away! Also Larry De Browner who now lives in Florida with wife and son! Larry lives in NY with wife and baby daughter and he is the monitor man for the band on the Letterman Show. At this very moment (Dec. 2000) Larry is throwing a meet in NY for ex-Rooseveltians he has managed to contact! I been gettin e-mail from lotsa these old school chaps an gals. Just heard from a Rob Swerding, who also went to Roosevelt the year before me. - Reet
